About Kanyakumari

Kanyakumari is located in the Southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Kanyakumari is the southern tip of mainland India and surrounded on three sides by Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean and Bay of Bengal. The city is also known as “God’s own district.” which is situated near it. Kanyakumari takes its name from the eponymous goddess Kunyakumari whose ‘Devi Kanya Kumari Temple’ is situated here. An ancient center of pearl fishing, it has been a center of art and religion for centuries. There are many temples and attractions to see around the town. Baywatch Amusement Park provides a more light-hearted alternative. This city is also known as the evergreen city of India. 

Seafoods and coconuts are big influences on the cuisine of this city. Vegetarians will find many options. Saravana is one restaurant that does excellent vegetarian meals.

Visitors who are done with the attractions can take the time to stroll through the Kunyakumari bazaar. The Udayagiri in the Fort, built in the seventeenth century, also makes a great trip during your stay. The place is filled with tourist attraction sites like historical or religious places.

Kanyakumari district has many beaches, religious sites and scenic areas. There are evergreen forests with rubber and clove plantations. The administrative headquarters is Nagercoil, twenty kilometers from Kanyakumari town. Shopping items is influenced by the sea too. Seashell art and palm leaf drawings are local crafts to look out for.

Despite of all these tourists’ places, Kanyakumari is especially famous for its mesmerizing sunrise and sunset, which is all because of the water which surrounds it. On the full-moon days, people fortunately get to see moon-rise and sunset at the same time. At temples, locals may be working as guides. Always be polite and friendly with the guides. If you use a guide, agree on a price beforehand to avoid dispute later. Common language much spoken in this region is Tamil or else English. 

The nearest city to Kanyakumari is Thiruvananthapuram which is exactly 85 kilometers away. The nearest airport to Kanyakumari is Trivandrum International Airport in Trivandrum. Fly into south India at Trivandrum in Kerala. From there, train, bus or taxi can help you reach Kanyakumari. The travel time is about three hours. Some travelers also reach Kanyakumari from Chennai. From Chennai, the travel time by the road is around fourteen to fifteen hours. Kanyakumari is well connected by train and this is a more comfortable option than bus, especially for long journeys. Long distance buses connect Kanyakumari to all the major south Indian cities

The ticket queue for ferry for visiting Vivekananda Rock Memorial is very long. Make sure you have ample time for that.

Both the sunrise and the sunset are not to be missed. The multi-colored water makes it so much more beautiful.
